What causes dry skin during the cooler months?
We all look forward to the cooler months: beautiful fall foliage, bonfires, all of the best holidays, and all of the best food. But with the cooler months comes dry, dehydrated skin. Itchy, cracking, irritated skin is common during this time of year. And trust us, we know how annoying it is.
What causes dry skin during the cooler months?
Your dry skin is actually caused by a change in humidity, not the actual temperature. Running the heat indoors sucks most of the moisture out of the air. The cold wind doesn’t help, either. The whole situation spells trouble for our skin.
But don’t worry, there are ways to combat the dryness and still have glowing skin all year long!
Tips for combating dry skin.
Exfoliate
Getting rid of old, dry skin cells helps reveal the supple skin underneath. It also allows the rest of your skincare to be absorbed and work better.
Use a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant a few times a week, depending on the product, to allow your skin to soak up all of the moisture it can during the dry months.
Moisturize
This one is probably obvious, but we cannot state enough how important it is. Exfoliation leaves a perfect canvas to soak up all of the moisture. PUUR Ingrid has an incredible line of facial oils, including Hydrate Therapy that is full of jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and other natural skin-loving ingredients that help keep your skin hydrated.
Avoid Retinol
Retinol can be drying and irritating, especially during the winter months. While it’s a powerful ingredient, it should be avoided, or at least scaled back during periods of seasonal dry skin. The goal is to give our skin as much moisture as possible, so you want to avoid any harsh treatments.
Suncare
Even in the cooler months, our skin still needs to be protected from the sun. It’s easy to forget the SPF when we’re wearing layers upon layers of clothes, but our face is still exposed to the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Don’t forget to use sunscreen when going outside.
Invest in a Humidifier
Central heat can do a number on our skin. It dries out the air, and subsequently, our skin. Investing in a good humidifier can restore that much-needed moisture back into the air. You'll be able to breathe easier, and your skin will thank you!
